John Muir: Man of the Mountains

John Muir National Historic Site preserves the Victorian home of the noted author and preservationist. Surrounded by almost 9 acres of fruit orchards and 326 acres of oak woodland, the site today is just a small piece of the original 2,600 acre ranch.

The United States is forever indebted to the "Father of the National Park Service" for helping to preserve this countries greatest treasures.

Where is the Muir home?

John Muir NHS is located in Martinez, California. Muir lived here because his wife and her family were here. John lived with his new inlaws, the Strentzel's, for 2 years while they built their dream house; soon to be the Muir family home.

Mt. Wanda

Originally part of the 2600 acre ranch, John Muir NHS aquired this 326 acres of oak woodland in 1993. Named for his oldest daughter, Muir took both girls on nature walks here to look at the trees, wildflowers and birds. We continue that tradition today with ranger led wildflower and bird walks in the spring, and full moon walks in the summer.

Camping?

Sorry, there is no camping or overnight parking available at John Muir NHS.

		Muir Woods? No, we are not Muir Woods National Monument. They are located in Marin County, just north of San Francisco. Visit these glorious redwoods named in honor of John Muir, then bring your fee reciept for same day entrance to John Muir NHS!
